Self-Care: Your New Super Power
We have all been through tremendous change the last year, and we are in new times that require new strategies. Navigating the unknown is all about learning new patterns and ways of being. I know for me it has been exhausting; I am setting up new programs, new technologies, content and partnerships and all this “Newness” is draining as well as being exciting.
With the unknown about the “Future of Work” and companies trying to figure out their new work model, how to keep teams engaged and grow company culture in a hybrid model is something we are all adjusting to in this new reality of work and life in the midst of COVID.
Any time we are starting something new, we need additional down time to integrate all we are learning and to incorporate these new ways of thinking and being. This requires more stillness, more rest, more self-care, in addition to activating a different part of your brain (or not activating your brain at all).
In order to flourish during these changing times, it is key that we look at our current practices and ask these key questions:
- How do I want to spend my time?
- What nourishes me?
- What gives me energy?
- What does my body, mind and spirit need most?
The next step is setting your strategy in place to have self-care time in your week, days and month and incorporate it as a normal part of your day. It could be something as simple as a daily gratitude practice or making time to laugh every day or something more involved such as learning to salsa dance. It may be incorporating napping into your day – research has shown that naps support brain function.
It could even be letting go of judgment about yourself or any negativity. These strategies can be ways of thinking, as well as ways of being and doing.
Whatever you choose, I would encourage you to exercise your self-care super power and start practicing it daily. Strengthening your self-care super power will set you up to continue to navigate the challenges ahead, prevent burnout and maintain mental and physical health. It will support you in showing up as your best self and supporting others in doing the same.
