Adrenaline is No Way to Experience the Holidays
The holiday season is a great opportunity for making conscious choices about how you want to experience the joy of the season. Do you feel like you are on a hamster wheel? Caught in the constant busyness of your life? The stress of buying gifts and preparing what you think you “should” for the holidays? What if you chose to slow down, get off the hamster wheel and do what brings you joy?
The hamster wheel is addictive because it fuels our Adrenaline.
Adrenaline produces energy; this is not the most healthy source, but is continually available. It offers us a burst of energy in times when we feel a threat, but too much of it can cause havoc on us physically, emotionally and spiritually. Adrenaline keeps you from being present.
Adrenaline is a racket; as humans, we can succumb to this drug instead of finding healthy energy sources. Adrenaline can also help us blast thorough difficult times.
The problem is that the adrenaline junkie creates crises just for the rush. When a person is on adrenaline, he or she has a respite from pain, and feelings are covered up. It is hard to be true to oneself when you are run by adrenaline.
Adrenaline creates a lifestyle. In order to get the rush, humans do soul-damaging things: overworking, acting greedy, insisting on getting ahead or winning, and keeping self in survival mode in order to have something to win at, etc.
It is a toxin, which keeps healthy people away and those who are not adrenaline dependent usually won’t develop close relationships with adrenaline addicts; it is too upsetting and painful. So, the addict is surrounded by those with broken wings – codependents or other addicts.
Warning Signs of Being an Adrenaline Addict:
- Arriving just in time or late
- You use being busy as an excuse, like a badge of honor
- You work all the time
- You over-promise
- You feel like you’re tolerating or putting up with things
- Trying to prove something by your results
- Involvement in nonessential projects or activities
- You allow for no downtime
- Not asking for what you need

Take time this season to slow down, help a friend or family member, be real with someone and share your presence. Your presence matters, and it is your love that is the best present of all.
It is so important to be sure you are taking time for you no matter what feelings the holidays bring up. The more you are in a place of feeling loved, the more that love overflows and benefits you and everyone else. The holidays are all about LOVE! It is a time to share your love, feel love and practice BEING love. Shifting your thoughts to what you are grateful for instead of what is bothering you is a great strategy to open your heart, and once you are residing in your heart, there is no room for anything else but what is most present there.
In my book, I share the practices I have learned and continue to practice that keep me balanced and adrenaline free. In addition, there are free resources on my website. I am offering a class on January 1st called Flowing into 2019 that will help you in creating healthy ways to manage your energy effectively so you can experience a state of flow and ease as you navigate 2019.
I wish for you deep stillness, presence and love as you flow through this amazing time of year.
