Coaching Up – Influencing with Confidence

By Kelly Johnson / April 18, 2025

Ever felt like your boss could use some coaching, but weren’t sure how to approach this conversation?

Many professionals struggle with giving feedback to leaders and cross-functional partners. But what if you could create an influential impact?

Lately, this has been a common topic for my clients: how to manage a boss who’s stuck in outdated leadership styles, who’s lacking emotional intelligence, and/or who’s resistant to change. More often than not, these leaders simply don’t realize how stuck they are. They may have a more fixed mindset than a growth mindset, which can be frustrating and impact an entire team’s culture.

This isn’t just about “managing up” or navigating uncooperative cross-functional partners. It’s about Coaching Up – finding ways to communicate and influence in a collaborative, positive way.

Coaching Up – Influencing with Confidence

What is Coaching Up?

Coaching Up is about positively influencing those above you in the hierarchy to foster better collaboration, decision-making, and leadership.

Why Coaching Up Matters

A culture of open, constructive feedback leads to stronger teams, better alignment, and more effective leadership.

4 Key Strategies for Coaching Up Successfully

· Shift Your Mindset First – Before having the conversation, step out of judgment. Your energy and presence matter. How can you give that leader the benefit of the doubt?

· Lead with Curiosity – Ask insightful questions to expand that leader’s awareness. Be genuinely curious about his/her thought process, perspectives and seek to understand that leader.

· Master the Art of Feedback – Use clarity, empathy, and timing to communicate that leader’s impact on you. This requires vulnerability—sharing your truth about how his/her leadership affects you.

· Focus on Solutions & Action – Ask questions that lead to solutions, build trust, and foster transparency in your communication.

Not only will these strategies help create healthier collaboration, but they’ll also make you more present and intentional in your interactions. Over time, this approach strengthens trust and improves communication within your team.
