What is Your Birdman Saying to You?
What is Your Birdman Saying to You?
I watched The Birdman movie recently and wanted to share my perception of the movie, and how we can all relate to it in our own lives. For those of you that have not seen it, it is about a man that is battling his ego and internal voice (birdman) with his physical reality of being an aging celebrity and not feeling successful in his work.
My perception of the birdman voice or alter ego of Michael Keaton vacillated between “Is he crazy?” and “Is he tapping into the true power of the inner self?” It starts with Michael Keaton meditating; he is levitating while he meditates. He has this ability to tap into super powers of his own, such as flying, moving things with his mind, or motioning his hand to throw something across the room. And yet he doesn’t feel good about himself because he is different and not recognized by society.
How often do you negate your gifts
because they are not recognized by society?
As I watched the movie, I realized he steps into showing his authentic, vulnerable self and recognized his love of this part of himself by honoring it and allowing himself to surrender into it. He is no longer denying it, no matter how crazy it seems.
What part of your true nature are you denying?
I left the movie with these questions:
- How often do you push away the very voice that is holding you in your potential?
- How often are you too afraid to take a chance and listen to it and take a risk by acting on it?
Where are you letting society dictate
your mind and take over your birdman voice?
Consider what practices and strategies you can begin to embrace to activate your Birdman:
Body – What is Your Body Telling You?
When you are not listening to your inner potential voice, how does your body feel? How can you move your body into a more relaxed state so that it trusts that inner voice? Do you feel energized or drained? What do you need to do to shift your body into a state of energized relaxation?
Mind – What Words are you Communicating to Yourself?
What is your birdman voice telling you? How are you acknowledging that voice and honoring it? What do you need to say or do to shift how you are communicating with yourself so that it supports you living in your true potential in all situations – business, personal, interpersonal?
Heart – What do You Know to be True?
How does your heart feel – heavy or light-hearted? When have you acted on what your heart tells you? When have you betrayed your true self and not acted on it? How can you build trust in acting on what your heart is telling you?
By working with your body, mind and heart, you create collaboration and integration of all your voices, which leads to learning to love all the voices in your head and parts of yourself that you own and that you fear. Only then can you truly learn to surrender into your full potential and trust that who you are is enough.
